For those looking for accommodation in Ras Sudr ( راس سدر‎ in Arabic), know that the area has great value-for-money hotels. Although it’s not a popular destination, Ras Sudr is only a 3-hour drive from downtown Cairo. The beach with blue and calm water attracts many young people to practice Kitesurfing.

We took advantage of our free weekend to take a dip in the city’s sea. One of our Egyptian friends has a travel agency and booked the hotel and van to take our group on Friday morning, with the return scheduled for Saturday at the end of the day. For those who don’t know, these are the days of the weekend here. Muslims have Friday as their holy day.

More about Ras Sudr:

The city of Ras Sudr is located on the Suez Gulf and is bordered by the Red Sea. Ras Sudr can also be written as Ras Sedr, after all the vowel is only added in the pronunciation, but it’s not present in the writing of the word in Arabic.

Located 200km from Cairo, to get to the city you have to go through the Suez Canal. The canal connects the Red Sea with the Mediterranean and allows the passage of ships to Europe and Asia without having to go around Africa. Going below sea level to reach the peninsula is an experience that makes the trip all the more special.

Be aware: To cross the channel there is a police search. Alcohol and drugs can be confiscated. All vehicles must stop there and present the traveler’s passport, in addition to the driver’s license. For this reason, during the summer and especially on holidays, the traffic is quite intense, stopping for hours.

Accommodation in Ras Sudr:

In Ras Sudr, as in many beaches in Egypt, the city center is away from the sea. Most of them even have private entrances for those staying in hotels or compounds. Therefore, I always recommend checking beforehand if the hotel or vacation rental mentions beach access.

For our weekend, we booked a room at Resort Green Sudr. The Resort is in front of the beach, with internal and private access for guests. Rooms are equipped with air conditioning, TV, and minibar. Most overlook the hotel’s garden.

We stayed in a suite. It has two rooms, an anteroom, and a bedroom. In addition, the apartment has a large balcony, with a table and chairs to enjoy the view. The bathrooms are private. I was very impressed with the value for money. A hotel of the same standard in Hurghada or Sharm El Sheik would be more than double the daily rate we paid.

We spent 4 days in Hurghada at a resort and we tell you more details in this post. For those looking for a more economical route, I also have tips in this post.

Our accommodation included breakfast and dinner. The Resort also has a beachfront restaurant/bar that is open throughout the late morning and afternoon. It was extremely necessary for us, who arrived very hungry at lunchtime. There they serve pizza, sandwiches, and other snacks and drinks.

The beach at Ras Sudr:

We spent the rest of the day on the hotel’s private beach. The water is not as crystal clear as in other parts of the Red Sea. However, the sea is calm, without waves, perfect for those who have children or just want to relax. Some of our friends have complained about the muddy ground in the area, but I must admit that I prefer mud to rocks.

For those who don’t know, fine white sand beaches you can only find on the North Coast of Egypt. However, this region is among the most expensive to stay in. You can hardly find hotels with beach access for less than 10,000 EGP a day.

Ras Sudr is well known for Kitesurfing. The sea and wind conditions are ideal for the sport. Our hotel even offered classes and equipment rental. Another activity that you cannot miss is witnessing the sunset on the spot. At the end of the day, the tide is low and you can walk for kilometers across the sea.

Sunset at Ras Sudr. One of the most beautiful moments of our day at the beach.

Dinner and breakfast at the hotel:

Another positive surprise was the meals at the Green Sudr Resort. First, we had been informed that some changes were going to happen in the buffet because of the pandemic (our trip took place in August 2020, when Egypt was resuming tourist activities after the Coronavirus). We soon thought that they would change the scheme to a fixed course, starter and dessert served at the table.

However, dinner was a large open-air buffet with a wide variety of typical Arab dishes. Employees served us, complying with hygiene and safety measures. The food was great. A drink (soda or water) and dessert (also served in buffet format) were also included.

The hotel’s restaurant also serves à la carte dishes for guests.

Breakfast was served at the table. Some typical Egyptian dishes were part of the menu, such as full (bean paste) and falafel. In addition to traditional western breakfast dishes such as omelets and pancakes.

As we were heading back to Cairo later that day, we choose to spend the rest of our stay at the hotel’s swimming pool. We made an agreement with the Resort to check out later and we were able to leave our luggage and change clothes in one of the rooms. We took the van around 4 PM and arrived in the capital as the sun was setting.

The Resort’s swimming pool is large and has a children’s area.
