Museum of Islamic Art

The Museum of Islamic Art was established in 1998 and has become Southeast Asia’s leading center for the preservation and education of Islamic art. With 30,000 square meters, the museum houses more than 12,000 artifacts. Among them are models of several mosques around the world and original manuscripts of the Koran.

The National Mosque of Malaysia has a capacity of 15,000 and is situated at the entrance to the Heritage Park. The mosque was built in 1965 on the site of a church, the Venning Road Brethren Gospel Hall, which had existed since 1922.

Its minaret, the tower where the calls for prayer are made, is 73 meters high. To visit the mosque, you need to remove your shoes and be aware of dress codes. Anyone wearing short clothing showing knees, shoulders, and elbows should wear a locally available hooded robe.

Women must keep their heads covered inside the mosque. Non-Muslims can visit the mosque only outside of prayer times, which take place 5 times a day. On Fridays, the Muslim holy day, the mosque is only open to those who are going to pray.

Kuala Lumpur Bird Park

Kuala Lumpur’s aviary park is home to more than 3,000 birds, including local and foreign species. There are about 200 different species that occupy the park’s nearly 21 acres of land. Visitation is divided into 4 zones. In zones 1 and 2, the animals are free and you walk among the birds. These are the free flight zones, where you can see owls, flamingos, peacocks… In zones 3 and 4 there are parrots, waterfowl, rheas, and also the hornbill, a native bird.

During the day, it is possible to engage in some park activities, such as feeding the animals. All done under the supervision of those who work on-site. In addition, twice a day there is a show in the local amphitheater. Get ready to see birds like parrots and macaws doing tricks like in a circus.

Kuala Lumpur Sentral railway station is the closest public transport hub. The Rapid KL B112 line takes you to Pasar Seni LRT station. You will get off in front of the National Museum, which is located on the edge of the park. Line B115 to Jalan Parlimen also passes by.

I always recommend using Google Maps to trace the routes and follow the stops. It has the most up-to-date information on routes and even bus and subway times. Also, there is another post here with tips on transportation in Kuala Lumpur.

For those taking the KTM Commuter Train, get off at KTM Old Railway Kuala Lumpur Station (KA02). The stop is located near the National Mosque, right at the entrance to the Park.

Where to eat in Kuala Lumpur Heritage Park:

Kuala Lumpur Bird Park has a restaurant, Hornbill Restaurant & Café. The restaurant serves some typical Malaysian dishes, as well as international and children’s dishes. We tried a Satay mix of meat and chicken and Fried Rice with chicken. Both are traditional dishes of Malaysian cuisine. For those who are not used to spicy food, I recommend asking the waiter to lower the seasoning.

There is also another restaurant in the Park, which is located inside the Museum of Islamic Art. Moza Restaurant serves a variety of typical Middle Eastern dishes, such as Falafel, lamb, and other delicacies. The restaurant is open from Monday to Sunday, from 10 AM to 5 PM.
