Getting around Egypt, for those visiting the country without guides or agency, can be a little challenging. However, nothing that technology can’t solve. In this post, you will find application tips that help you to walk around Egypt in the safest and most economical way.

Ways to get around in Egypt

Like most countries, you will find buses, taxis, and planes for longer distances. However, public transport in Egypt is not well signposted and you will rarely find tourists using it. I don’t recommend taking the regular buses or microvans without a local to help you.

In Cairo, the metro covers a good part of the city. The transportation is great and cheap, in addition to being simple to use. But there are specific areas that you will only have access to with private transport or some apps. So, read the entire post to find the best ways to get around in Egypt.

Looking for more Cairo transportation tips? Then check out this post on how to get around the city.

Getting around in Egypt with Buses

For traveling between cities, there are some companies that have a service above the standard. Among them are Go Bus and Blue Bus. Both have a website and an app where you can buy tickets in advance. I went to Hurghada with Go Bus and the ticket costed 225 EGP at that time. Less than 900 EGP round trip for two people.

Check out more about our Hurghada trip here.

You can also buy tickets directly at the bus station. On El-Galaa Street, next to the Ramses Hilton Hotel, Go Bus has a point of sale. Buses also depart from there. There is another ticket office in Nasr City where buses also leave from. The office is on El-Nasr Highway.

Getting around in Egypt with Train

The train journeys from Cairo to Luxor are quite popular among tourists. However, this isn’t the only destination you can make using this transport. Other cities that also have train stations are Aswan, Suez, Port Saide, and Alexandria. Before buying your ticket, be aware of the chosen category, as there are 3 different options that differ in price and comfort.

Types of Train in Egypt:

There are 3 types of train, which differ both in price and comfort. The Ordinary Train (ORD) is the cheapest. Most don’t have air conditioning, in addition to being in poor shape. Also, they are quite crowded and slow, as they make several stops on the way. This train isn’t very touristic and you will find only locals inside.

The Express Train (EXP), or express train, is faster and has air conditioning. You can travel at night or during the day. However, don’t expect quality service. The trips are still long, around 10 hours. And the seats are similar to those on an airplane.

The Sleeping Train (Sleeper) is the most common among tourists. The ticket entitles you to a single or double cabin, with a bed, air conditioning, and two meals included (dinner and breakfast). Each car has two bathrooms and about 10 to 12 cabins. Despite being considered first class, there is nothing too luxurious about the trip.

How to buy a train ticket in Egypt:

You can buy your ticket in two ways: directly at the Ramses train station or online. If you book the tour with an agency, they will purchase the ticket for you. The easy way for foreigners is to make the purchase online on the Egyptian National Railways website.

The website has an English translation. However, be careful when selecting the times and type of train. You will need to register with your name, date of birth, and passport. Select AC 1 or AC 2 (first or second class). Payment is made by card through the website.

Directly on the website of the Watania Sleeping Trains agency, you can also purchase a sleeper ticket. The company also has a ticket office inside the station. It’s on the right side, one of the first doors before reaching the common ticket office of Ramses Train Station. The ticket costs 80 USD for the “sleeper train” (price in 2022).

Microbus

A practical and economical option to travel to other cities is to use the vans operated by the Swvl app. This company operates short-haul trips, with destinations between Cairo, Alexandria, and the Sahel. In addition to several points in the city of Cairo and the region.

In the app, you can follow the route, check the address where the van will pick you up, and the stop closest to your destination. Payment is made directly in the app. A trip between Cairo and Alexandria costs around 120 EGP (price in 2022).

Uber and Careem apps

Yes, short-distance trips can be booked through Uber or the local private ride app, Careem. In the Egyptian version, some destinations even have a fixed price. Some of the destination options are Sahel and Alexandria. In my opinion, it’s only worth it if you’re sharing the trip with other friends.

Planes

All major touristic cities in Egypt have their own airport. This is the fastest way to get around. But the most expensive too. For small distances, it’s not recommended. For example from Cairo to Alexandria. You’ll likely spend more time going to the airport and waiting for your flight than you will be driving into the town.

Now, if you want agility and comfort, I recommend using air transportation. Mainly to Luxor, Aswan, and cities on the Sinai Peninsula such as Sharm El Sheik. These trips can take about 10 hours by car or train.

Car rental

In my post about transportation in the city of Cairo, I commented that I wouldn’t recommend renting a vehicle. However, there are some exceptions. Renting a car in Egypt is great in two situations: if you are traveling to the North Coast or if you are heading to the Sinai Peninsula.

In both cases the roads are good. On North Coast, most of the area is made up of private compounds and resorts. So it’s good to have a car as you’ll need to travel long distances to access restaurants, nightclubs, and other places. Same thing to those who are going to Sharm El Sheik, for example.

In this post, you will find tips to build a budget travel itinerary in Venice.

Venice is considered an extremely popular destination for its romanticism and unique style. However, prices in Venice are not “popular” prices at all. Venice is a very expensive city, especially as it’s extremely touristic.

How to save on transportation in Venice:

Here in this post, we have already talked about how to get to Venice and which is the cheapest route. However, when we talk about moving within the city, Venice has its peculiarities. As the city is a set of islands, the most common way of getting around is by boat, called Vaporettos.

Photo of a vaporetto, boat transiting the canals of Venice.
Vaporetto traveling along the canals of Venice.

This kind of ferry is operated by ACTV. However, the price is not the most attractive. The single ticket costs 7.5 euros and can be purchased on the boat. However, it is possible to buy 24, 48 or 72-hour passes. With the pass, transportation is unlimited, including going to other islands in Venice. The ticket can be purchased on the VeneziaUnica website.

If you don’t mind walking around the city a lot, this is definitely the only way to get around Venice economically. It’s possible to transit between all the main attractions on foot. Download Google Maps so you don’t get lost in the narrow streets of Venice.

Check out more essential travel apps here.

How to save on accommodation in Venice:

For some travelers who are looking to cut costs without taking Venice off the itinerary, it’s common to choose to stay in the surroundings of the city. An example is the city of Mestre, about 15 minutes by train from Venice. You can choose to take a train between Venezia Mestre and Venezia Santa Lucia, or to take a bus to Piazzale Roma.

There are also several hotels located on the mainland of the city, which are half the price of others in the center. However, you will have to include in your budget the trip to the center of Venice. If your hotel has easy access to one of the Vaporetto lines, you can buy a single pass and use it every day of the trip.

How to save on food in Venice:

Photo of a pizza with tomato sauce and four cheeses at the Pizza 2000 restaurant.
Pizza 2000 is one of the must-visit restaurants in Venice.

Coming from Rome to Venice, we can see a significant increase in restaurant prices. It’s hard to find affordable and quality options. Also, be alert for “offers” presented by waiters at the doors of restaurants.

Some places advertise very attractive prices, such as a plate with a starter plus a drink for 24 euros. However, when you receive the bill, what should be 24 becomes almost 40 euros with the addition of many fees. One restaurant even charged us for the table and cutlery we used.

Always search platforms like Tripadvisor for reviews from other customers before choosing a location. Here we have a list of our favorites in the city. Another tip is to stay in rooms with a kitchen, so it’s possible to reduce the number of meals outside the house. Products such as wine and cheese are extremely cheap in the markets.

How to save on tours in Venice:

Walking around Venice isn’t difficult, after all, everything is accessible on foot. With a cell phone with a map and a previous search on the internet, you can build your itinerary without needing guides. We have prepared a map with the main attractions of the city to make your journey easier:

In addition, it’s possible to search for walking tours in the city, as they are usually free or with a spontaneous contribution. If you’re traveling on a budget, don’t go for traditional touristic activities like the gondolas. A trip for the couple can reach 100 euros.

When we talk about the luxury scene in Cairo, we have to talk about SACHI Restaurant. Their first breach in Heliopolis offers a party-pub vibe. The space is always full on weekend nights, where guests can enjoy the culinary plates inspired by Mediterranean-Asian cuisine.

Sachi has received many prizes for their quality as Travel & Hospitality Award and TripAdvisor “Certificate of Excellence”. On Sachi’s second house in Hacienda bay, North Coast, parties are celebrated on summer weekends with DJs from Egypt and the Middle East.

SACHI bar provides a menu full of cocktails (something hard to get in Cairo). We got catch about having a truly foawerner restaurant experience inside the city and we went to check it out.

Chateaubriand Beef from Sachi was one of the best steaks we ate in Egypt so far.

Sachi serves as entrance plate bread and butter from the best quality. We ordered Chateaubriand beef, that consist of South African Beef Tenderloin, Roasted Vegetables with Green Peppercorn and Shallot Vinaigrette Sauces. The plate has 600 GR beef meat and serves two persons. The meat is soft and it taste like a real roasted beef. The amount could serve a third person. We were so full that we had to take home half of the plate.

The total of the plate was EGP 1,240. We also ordered two bears, that are the perfect combination for this plate.

Chateaubriand Beef: EGP 1,240

Heineken Bottle: 115 EGP

The total of our order was 1,470 EGP plus charges. And we can say it worth every cent. The quality is amazing and is a restaurant worth trying.

In this post, you will find tips, prices, and everything you need to know to visit the Coliseum. For those who followed our 4-day trip through Rome, you know that we went in our first day to the Vatican. For our second day, we save a visit to one of Rome’s most emblematic monuments: the Coliseum.

ROME GUIDE: COLOSSEUM, PALATINE, AND ROMAN FORUM

As you would expect from the monument that makes up one of the 7 wonders of the modern world, the lines to enter were kilometers long. In December, when we took this tour, the Colosseum, Roman Forum, and Palatine closed at 16:30. Which left us a little desperate about spending our time in lines.

During the European winter, some attractions have their opening hours shortened. That’s why we chose to buy a guided tour right there near the Arch of Constantine. All guided tours have a different entrance than other visitors, which makes you skip the line. We negotiated the price and entered the Coliseum in less than half an hour.

To get around Rome, I can say that there is nothing better than public transport. Especially with the high value of the euro, taking private transport has become almost impossible in Europe. However, this is not a problem in big cities.

There is plenty of buses and trains that take you to all the main tourist attractions in the city. On our four-day trip to Rome, we got around easily with public transport. So, to make your experience easier, we have prepared here some tips on how to use public transport in Rome.

PUBLIC TRANSPORT IN ROME

In this post, we will talk a little more about transportation between cities in Italy with the best cost benefit.

Italy is full of incredible places to visit. Milan, Naples, Venice, Rome, each city has their own unique attractions. Those who follow the blog already know that we spent the new year in Rome. After, we decided to go on a trip to Venice. We bought the tickets at the last minute, but researching well we could find a good price to go by bus.

Wondering how to get to Venice? Check out this post for tips.

Types of Transportation between cities in Italy:

To move between cities in Italy, tourists find mainly three options: train, bus, and plane. Here are some of the advantages and disadvantages of each one, among other tips:

Picture of a Flixbus bus in green.

Getting around by Bus:

The bus trip, although not very comfortable for far destinations, is a great option for those who will buy tickets at the last minute. Because ticket prices don`t have big variations. Usually, the prices are quite stable between seasons. Also, bus tickets are usually much more affordable than train and plane tickets.

We took the bus from Rome to Venice, leaving at night on the second day of 2020. The ticket cost around 44 euros, traveling with Flixbus company. Yes, there are cheaper options than that, but I always recommend choosing a good company when traveling. A few euros more will guarantee more comfort, good service, and safety.

We bought our ticket on the day of the trip directly at the bus station. However, Flixbus has an application for buying tickets online. You can also follow the bus route and schedule by the App. The trip took about 7 hours with the stops. We chose to travel at night because like this we would be able to save a day on the hotel rate as well.

Getting around by Train:

Getting around by train is one of the fastest ways, and I dare say one of the most beautiful too, to travel around Italy. The same route we took to Venice would take less than 4 hours. Plus, you don’t have to go through airport bureaucracy, which would cost more time. Being at the station half an hour before boarding is enough to check where the train is stopped and get on board.

However, be prepared to pay very expensive fares for the trip. Tickets can cost around 200 euros, depending on the stops and the distance between cities. On the Trenitalia website, you can find all the train itineraries and prices.

Two Trenitalia wagons parked at the station. The train has the colors of the Italian flag, red, green and white.
Trenitalia wagon at the station.

To our surprise, we found tickets from Venice to Bologna, from where our flight to Greece would depart, for only 25 euros. The station is right at the entrance to the city and access is easy. We made a very quick trip on the train to Bologna station, and then a few more minutes by bus to the airport.

Airplane Locomotion:

Getting around by plane is ideal for those who are planning their travel itinerary in advance. There are several low-cost companies operating in Europe, such as Ryanair. It’s possible to find promotional flights for 10 euros! However, these tickets don’t include checked baggage. If you are carrying a lot of bags, the price may be more expensive than other tickets.

If you have time to plan, stay tuned to the prices of air tickets until two to three months before your flight date. This time is when prices use to be at their lowest. Also, be flexible with dates and times. If you must travel by plane, checking the price of the tickets should be the first step before planning the rest of the itinerary. I use the Skyscanner ticket comparator to guarantee the best price for the route.

Best travel apps you need on your phone.

Although flights have a short time until de destination, take into consideration when purchasing the tickets the time it takes you to go through all the bureaucracy at the airport. From baggage check to boarding. In addition, airports are usually far from the city and the time to get to them also needs to be taken into account.

We went for brunch this time at PAUL restaurant in Cairo. They have many branches around the city. We went for the one in Downtown Katamey Mall (New Cairo), so we could also enjoy the open area.

There is no doubt that French cuisine is one of the best ones in the world. Especially when we talk about bakeries. That’s why for me a French breakfast is always a good choice. So check out how was our experience at PAUL restaurant in Cairo.

PAUL French cuisine

PAUL was created in 1889 and everything there has a French signature. From the decoration to the selection of bread, pâtisserie, sandwiches, soups, and salads.

Picture of breads in a basket on top of a wood table. Besides there is portions of butter and olive paste.

The smell of the bread inside the restaurant is irresistible. That’s why we choose a sandwich for sharing (saving some space for the desert). For the entrance, the place serves some fresh and homemade bread, butter, and olive paste. It was really amazing and we probably enjoyed it more than the dish we choose.

Our sandwich came right after, and we got a little disappointed with the bread they served. It was common white sandwich bread, a little toasted. The bread served as an entrance was ten times better. The filling was made with avocado and chicken and was actually tasty, but not spectacular.

They also served french fries and green salad with the sandwich. After the first meal, we also ordered two coffees and a special french toast. And I believe these were the highest from our visit.

The French Toast came out to be so big that we almost thought we won’t be able to finish it. The bread was baked in pieces with cream and served with honey, red fruits, bananas, and ice cream. It arrived on the table still hot from the oven. The cappuccino was also big and creamy, served with Madeline.

PAUL, like most of the international restaurants in Cairo, is more expensive than a daily restaurant. But the quality of their bakery products is really good. The plates were nicely done and we will deftly go back to try the other items on the menu.

Naomi steakhouse and sushi restaurant recently opened on the central street of Zamalek, on the 26 of October. The place is located in the yard of the Zamalek Theater. We were invited to dinner there with our friends and the atmosphere is very nice for gatherings.

Much more than a beautiful place for a coffee with friends, Naomi offers some good dishes. On the menu, steak and sushi are the main orders. This combination is very attractive to all customers.

Our experience

After a lot of indecision on what to order from the menu, we chose to go with the sushi plates. Naomi doesn`t have a set of different pieces, which leaves the task of deciding what to eat more difficult in my opinion (and sometimes more expensive).

Finally, we ordered different rolls and four salmon nigiri. The hot lemon spicy was really good and fresh, but probably the ones with avocado and salmon were our favorites. We also ordered 2 salmon gunkans, one spicy and the other without sauce. The pieces are quite large, but in our opinion, it doesn’t compensate in terms of cost-benefit.

The total of our order was 750.00 EGP. Despite being a little expensive, the quality is quite good. For me, especially when it comes to sushi restaurants, quality should come first then searching for the best price. The restaurant has very good promotions for the weekends, like “All you can eat of sushi”. It`s worth checking their Instagram for promotions before going to the restaurant.

If you are searching for what to do in Lebanon, this post has 15 suggestions of places to visit in the country.

Lebanon entered my travel wish list by chance, and I certainly didn’t regret taking half a month to travel inside the country. I applied for a position at Worldpackers and in less than a month I was flying to Lebanon. You can check out more about my volunteering at Zouk Mosbeh here.

The country is full of history, as well as beautiful landscapes. Also, their currency makes it cheap for foreigners to travel there. In cities like Byblos, in the north of the country, there are signs of civilization from 7,000 BC. Despite not being a traditional destination, tourism accounts for around 10% of Lebanon’s GDP.

Are you interested in getting to know Lebanon? Check out a little more about the country and the best places to visit.

A little more about Lebanon:

Lebanon is one of the Middle Eastern countries that is situated on the Asian continent. The region was once home to the oldest civilizations such as Phoenicians, Assyrians, Persians, Greeks, Byzantines, and Ottoman Turks. That’s why Lebanon is a country full of cultural and religious diversity.

Today the country is divided between Catholics and Muslims. By law, the posts of president, prime minister, and parliamentary spokesperson must be held respectively by a Maronite Christian, a Sunni Muslim, and a Shiite Muslim.

On the border between Syria and Israel, the country was marked by intense conflicts such as the Civil War of 1975 and the Lebanon War of 2006. Today the country is in one of its biggest economic crises after decades of corruption and conflicts.

Is traveling to Lebanon safe?

Like most countries in the Middle East, it is safe to travel to Lebanon. Despite having faced serious conflicts at the beginning of the century, the Lebanese today live in peace. The serious economic crisis that the country has been facing since 2019 doesn’t make it unsafe for tourism. On the contrary, with the currency devaluation, this destination has become very attractive to foreigners.

What to visit in Lebanon?

Lebanon has a lot to offer to tourists who visit it. As it’s a small country (with only 10,400 km²), two weeks are enough to visit all the most important points. The country is full of historical monuments, but it’s also an incredible destination for those who don’t like visiting museums.

For example, sports enthusiasts can go skiing or hiking in the region of Mzaar Kfardebian and Jabal Moussa. Those who want to enjoy the beach can stay at the resorts of Jounieh. Those who want to enjoy the nightlife have several options of bars and nightclubs in Beirut, in addition to the beach clubs in the coastal region.

When to visit Lebanon?

From May to September, tourists can enjoy warmer temperatures (about 77 to 90°F) to go to the beach. If you want to ski and enjoy the winter, you need to schedule your trip between the months of December to February. More historical tours can be done at any time of the year.

What to do in Lebanon at night?

Among Arab countries, Lebanon has remained more open to Western culture. It’s easy to buy alcoholic beverages and women and men can dress as they like. At night, the Gemmayze neighborhood welcomes many people looking for the best drinks and restaurants in Beirut. You can admire the sunsets in the beach clubs on the Lebanese coast

What to do in Lebanon:

Beirut:

The city of Beirut is the capital and largest city in Lebanon. Beirut International Airport is located around 9 km from the city center, and all international flights depart and land from there. For these and other reasons, Beirut is a mandatory stop for anyone visiting Lebanon. Two days in the city are enough to visit the main historical sites in the capital.

Mohammad Al-Amin Mosque

The Mohammad Al-Amin Mosque is one of the city’s postcards. Also known as the blue mosque because of its domes, the mosque is the largest in Lebanon. Its construction was delayed by the conflicts in the city of Beirut and the mosque was only inaugurated in 2008.

The mosque is open for visitation outside prayer hours, which are in total 5 times a day. Women must wear Abaya to enter (a black dress that covers the entire body). Abayas are provided for tourists at the entrance. Men cannot be wearing shorts or tank tops.

Right in front of the mosque is the Statue of the Martyrs, a tribute to the combatants killed in 1916 in the Arab Uprising against Ottoman Turkish rule. The monument, damaged by firearms, remains current as it recalls those killed in the Civil War and the Lebanon War.

Beirut city center

Still, in the same area, you can visit the Al-Abed clock tower and St. George’s Cathedral. The Maronite cathedral is next to the mosque. Going right in the street of the cathedral is Nejmeh Square and in the center of it is the Clock Tower.

About a 30-minute walk from the venue is the National Museum of Beirut. Many of the pieces exposed inside were brought from the city of Byblos, in addition to other archaeological sites in the country. The museum traces the history of the Phoenicians, Romans, and Persians, among others in the region.

Pigeon Rocks

At the end of the day, I recommend watching the sunset at Pigeon Rocks, in the Raouche neighborhood. The landscape is one of the main postcards of Beirut. At night, enjoy Lebanese nightlife in the city’s bars and pubs. Beirut is full of clubs and neighborhoods like Hamra, where visitors and locals jump from one bar to another.

Photo taken on top of a mountain towards the sea. In the center, two rocks rise amid the blue-green water. On top, yellow grass. The stone on the left rises in the center forming a tunnel.
Pigeon Rocks, in the Raouche neighborhood.

Citadel of Tripoli:

Located 85 kilometers north of the capital, the city of Tripoli is the second largest city in Lebanon. In it, we can notice a strong influence of Muslim and Arab cultures. Tripoli is famous for Arabian sweets, with very traditional bakeries such as Kasr al Helou, or “Palace of Sweets”.

Be sure to visit the Fort of Raymond de Saint-Gilles. The site is also known as the Citadel of Tripoli or ‘Qal’at Saint-Gilles’ in Arabic. Raymond VI of Saint Gilles built it at the time of the Crusades. Less than 5 minute walk from the fort is the old market Khan Al-Khayyatin, where you can find traditional Lebanese items.

Citadel of Byblos:

The city of Jubayl is better known as Byblos, the name she received during Greek domination. Byblos is one of the oldest cities in the world. The first human records in the region date back to 5,000 BC. The city witnessed different periods of domination, including by the Phoenician, Egyptian, Greek, and Roman peoples.

During the Crusades in the 12th century, the city was fortified. It was at this time that Byblos Castle was constructed. The Citadel of Byblos is a mandatory stop in Lebanon, not only for its history but also for its landscape.

Also, those who take this tour cannot miss the Souk, a traditional market located in front of the entrance to the citadel. This is the perfect place to buy travel souvenirs.

Ruins of Baalbek:

About an hour and a half from Beirut, the city of Baalbek have one of the UNESCO world heritage sites. Former Phenicia region, the city became a Roman colony. It was ruled by Emperor Constantine in his Christian era until Islamic domination. Today, the city’s acropolis preserves important historical remains. The largest temples in the region are the Temple of Jupiter, Bacchus, and Venus.

Photo of the ruins in the city of Balbeque. More than 10 tall columns still support the temple's walls. In front, several smaller stones are scattered on what was once another building.
Baalbek ruins.

The entrance fee costs the equivalent of 10 USD and gives access to archaeological sites. My highlight goes to the Bacchus Temple, which is extremely preserved. One day is enough to know Baalbek and its attractions. I recommend searching for some private tours that have transportation from Beirut. You can search for agencies and compare guide prices with the Get Your Guide app.

Check here the advantages and disadvantages of buying guided tours with an agency!

Jabal Moussa Biosphere Reserve:

The Jabal Moussa is located in the Kesrouan district. Protected by UNESCO, the reserve has 6,500 hectares. The reserve, in addition to preserving the region’s biodiversity, also contains historical and cultural heritage. The site contains ruins from the Ottoman period, Roman engravings, and important places in Phoenician mythology.

For those who enjoy hiking and nature, I recommend booking a full day to explore the Jabal Moussa reserve. Be prepared to experience freezing temperatures there in the winter. It is located near the ski resorts and it’s possible to see snow in the region.

Beiteddine Palace:

The Shihab dynasty built the Beiteddine Palace between 1788 and 1818. It’s located in the city of Beiteddine. Later on, it became a government building during Turkish-Ottoman rule. In addition to the period when Lebanon was an autonomous state, being part of Mandatory Syria and administered by France.

The palace was restored and became the president’s summer residence when Lebanon became independent in 1943. The visit to the Beiteddine Palace costs around 10 USD and can take between two and three hours. The palace is open daily. But at certain times of the year, it’s not allowed to visit all the rooms.

Jeita Grotto:

Jeita Grotto is formed by two interconnected caves, with a total length of approximately 9 km. The caves are located in the Nahr al-Kalb valley, 18 km from the Lebanese capital. Created in the prehistoric era, Jeita Grotto today supplies thousands of Lebanese with water.

The lower cave is submerged by an underground river and can be visited in small boats. In 1958, the upper part was discovered 60 meters above the lower cave. The caves were connected with an access tunnel and crosswalks were installed for visitors. In the upper cave, you can see one of the largest stalactites in the world.

Harissa (Lady of Lebanon sanctuary):

A few kilometers from the Lebanese capital is the Harissa, also known as Our Lady of Lebanon. The Virgin Mary statue was built in 1908 and is located on top of a hill in the town of Jounieh. They are about 650 meters high. The statue measures 8.5 meters in height.

Beirut is about 25 kilometers away from the place. It’s possible to get there by car or by cable car. The climb is worth it when we come across the view of Beirut. It’s recommended for visitors not wear low-cut or short clothes. The sanctuary has a cathedral and also a cafeteria.

ski resort Mzaar Kfardebian:

The Mzaar Kfardebian is located an hour away from Beirut. This is the biggest ski resort in the Middle East. Consisting of 42 hills that stretch for 80 kilometers, the ski resort offers lessons covering both advanced and beginner levels. In addition, other attractions work on-site. The cable car, for example, was brought from Switzerland and on clear days it’s possible to see Beirut from the top of the hills.

The ski season runs from early December to early April. But be aware of the weather conditions to schedule the tour. I was there in the last weeks of March and, despite seeing snow, it was already closed for skiing.

One of the most traditional and touristic restaurants in Cairo is the famous Naguib Mahfouz. The place is located inside Khan El-Khalili, the biggest bazaar of Cairo, visited by millions of tourists. The restaurant serves traditional Egyptian food, including plates for lunch and breakfast.

Naguib Mahfouz coffee shop and Khan El-Khalili restaurant

Naguib Mahfouz is a coffee shop named as a tribute to the Nobel prize-winner Egyptian novelist. Running by the same owners in the same place is the restaurant called Khan El-Khalili, as the market. The Naguib Mahfouz coffee shop serves drinks and also snacks. Khan El Khalili restaurant has a menu with oriental plates.

Both can be accessed through the same door. Opened in 1989, the place keeps the arabesque décor and all traditional and luxury Arab styles. All design takes you back to the Fatimid Caliphate era. From the paintings and the furniture to the uniform of the staff.

On the menu, you will find the most traditional Egyptian food. Including really local plates like Koshari, but for much more expensive prices than outside. That being said, the cleanness and service are also higher quality than you’ll find in most of the nearby restaurants. We chose two dishes: Shish Tawook and Veal.

Picture of two plates on the golden table. The plates have barbecued meat and vegetables. Fries and bread are also on the table. Two juices of mango are served on glasses.

The food in Khan El Khalili:

The meat plates come with your choice of side dish, which can be french fries or rice. We choose the Shish Tawook and Veal, which also come with grilled vegetables. The rice portion was really disappointing. For sure I would recommend the fries if you don’t want to leave the restaurant hungry.

Anyway, the taste was great. The food was well done, with emphasis on the chicken grilled and spices, and also the mango juice, which was super fresh. The restaurant serves its plates with traditional Egyptian bread. One more reason to choose fries and not rice, so you can do an Egyptian sandwich.

In the end, the total of our order was:

Shish Tawook: 170 EGP
Veal: 230 EGP
2 Mango juices: 120 EGP

With services and charges, we paid a total of 663,94 EGP. I would say that this is a restaurant for one time only. It’s much more made for tourists than locals. The decoration and the location are really nice, but deftly you can find the same quality of food in other places for cheaper prices.
